In December 2005, the Pune Municipal Corporation approved an excellent Development Plan (DP) for the 23 merged villages which includes a Bio Diversity Park on the hills of Pune. However, the Government of Maharashtra has till date not sanctioned the DP. It is believed that the State Government is now seriously considering scrapping the Bio Diversity Park and allowing for 4% construction on our hills which will lead to more and more construction. Janwani strives to save these bio diversity parks... though a strong people initiation, support, ideation and a solution based approach is required.... Proposed Bio Diversity Parks are really beneficial as they will provide clean fresh air, beautiful open spaces for walks and recreation; making Pune a 'model' Indian and Asian city. All citizens of Pune, our families, friends, shall be benefited from this project. However a small but highly influential politician-cum-builder lobby would benefit most if building construction on the hills is allowed and the Bio Diversity Park is scrapped. They continue to stress it with an argument that the Biodiversity Park will encourage proliferation of slums!! All who belong to Pune and want to make it truly “livable”… we need your opinion. Janwani strives to make Pune a truly livable destination with futuristic perspective. Issues like above and more need to be resolved with extensive people participation and support making Pune fit for human habitation. We all know and acknowledge the fact that Pune Metropolitan Area (PMR), which includes Pune city as well as Pimpri, Chinchwad areas along with the neighboring villages, is growing leaps and bounds. The tremendous growth in the region provides innumerable opportunities as well as poses serious challenges in converting these opportunities into actual positive outcomes. If we let the region grow with a ‘business as usual’ mindset, then such a growth is unsustainable and will put us back on slow track. In order to reap the benefits of the potential of the region, an effort is made to prepare a Vision Document for Pune. Janwani in its attempt to envision a better and ‘livable’ Pune needs an opinion from everyone – one and all – who belongs to Pune. The aim is to involve all the stakeholders in this process. The stakeholders include all those who inhabit in the region, which includes Punekars as well as students and professionals from outside Pune, Maharastra and India.
